Welcome to the Leader-Post Newspaper in Education program.

What is NIE?

Newspapers In Education (NIE) is an international program in which newspapers are used as a learning resource in the classroom.

The Leader-Post NIE program is a partnership between our local schools, the community and the newspaper. Thanks to our contributors we are able to provide newspapers to schools to use as a learning tool in the classroom at no cost to them.

Our goal is to provide an interactive resource tool, a "living textbook," that can enhance lessons by offering students and teachers fresh resources every day.

Newspapers make great educational tools because they are current, fun to use, and contain reading material of interest to everyone. The newspaper connects students to their community, province and the world.

Student Quotes

"We use the paper in so many ways. We read the paper everyday in English Language Arts. When we read the stories on the front page we do the five W's, Who, What, Where, Why, When."

Rebecca Flynn
Lumsden Elementary School

"Thank you for supplying us with the newspapers. I enjoyed the newspaper because I could keep up with what is happening in Saskatchewan. There are a lot of interesting things in the Leader-Post and that's why I like reading it!"

Emily Pletz
Lumsden Elementary School

I want to thank you for taking time to deliver your papers. We used them for making art, reading, weather forecast and updating us on everything else. Many teachers said it was a good idea to have newspapers in a classroom. The newspaper has a little bit of everything in it so everybody can read it. Well I hope next year I have the newspaper in my classroom. It was very kind of you guys to give us some."

Jodi Cary
Lumsden Elementary School

"We use the paper a lot, even for work like ELA, DEAR (Drop Everything And Read), the five W's, discussion and we share it with other classes."

Zach Mansbridge Fafard
Lumsden Elementary School

"We wrote in our journals about our opinions on the articles. My teacher would read it to us everyday. It was really great having the newspaper. Thanks."

James Beatty

"Thank you for sending our classroom the newspaper! I enjoyed keeping up to date with the stuff going on around me! I enjoy reading the comics, especially For Better or For Worse. I think it is important to know what's going on around you. We appreciate your effort in delivering the paper to our school. Other classes around our school ask to borrow it."

Rebecca Ruda
Lumsden Elementary School

"I really enjoy reading your newspaper. There's always something interesting going on and you sure know how to inform us. Thank you for making school just a little bit better."

Newspapers enhance your students learning experience in various ways

In the educational literature of the past 30 years, research has shown that:

  • Newspaper use in school increases student awareness about the immediate community and the world at large, and has a positive effect on student attitudes toward school, community and subject matter.
  • Students who used newspapers as a principal source material had better achievement scores in social studies, language arts and mathematics than their matched counterparts, who relied only on textbooks.
  • Studies show that newspaper use helps students surpass their peers in reading levels and achievement scores.
  • The newspaper's many and varied writing styles provide specific models of writing for a particular purpose and audience.
  • Unlike a textbook, which can quickly become outdated, the newspaper chronicles "history as it happens."
