Scholarships and Bursaries

The Leader-Post Foundation, formerly known as the Leader-Post Carrier Foundation, is a not-for-profit organization established in 1988 in tribute to the newspaper's carrier force.

The Foundation has both an educational and a humanitarian mandate, providing financial support to people and projects within the Leader-Post's market area in southern Saskatchewan. While it was originally named in honor of Leader-Post carriers, the Foundation does not restrict its support to past or present carriers.

As of August 2007, the Foundation has awarded $225,000 in scholarships and bursaries to southern Saskatchewan students for post-secondary education. It has also committed a grant of $100,000 for a library in the new mother-baby unit at the Regina General Hospital.

Bursaries of $5,000 each are awarded each summer to a selected number of students who meet the Foundation's criteria for financial assistance. These include school and community involvement, academics and financial need.

Bursary applications are available at the Leader-Post, online and from guidance counselors at many high schools in Regina and southern Saskatchewan.

Most funding for the Foundation is derived from the publication of books. However, it is also supported by public and private donations, as well as special projects organized on behalf of the Foundation by the Leader-Post.

A 10-member board of directors, made up of representatives from the Leader-Post and the community at large, oversees the Foundation. Chairman Jim Toth can be reached at: jtoth@leaderpost.canwest.com. Bursary applications can also be obtained at that e-mail address. Vice-chairman Janice Dockham is the newspaper's Editor-in-Chief and can be contacted at (306) 781-5378 or by e-mail at: jdockham@leaderpost.canwest.com.
